SMS Opt-In & Consent

How Flare users consent to receive text messages.

Flare ("Flare," "we," "us," or "our") sends text messages (SMS) as part of operating the Flare mobile app. This page documents exactly how end users give consent to receive those messages, what messages we send, and the disclosures shown at the point of opt-in.

1. Business and messaging use case

Flare is a mobile app that lets you broadcast a time-boxed "I'm free" signal to your friends. We use SMS only for account security and transactional purposes:

  • One-time passcodes (OTP) to verify your phone number and sign you in.
  • Account & security notifications related to your use of the app.

We do not send marketing or promotional text messages.

2. How end users opt in

Consent is collected through a single web/app opt-in during sign-up. The workflow is:

  1. The user opens the Flare app and begins sign-up.
  2. On the phone-number screen, the user enters their mobile number and checks a consent checkbox that is unchecked by default. Checking the box is an explicit, affirmative action; consent is not a condition of using the app, and the box is never pre-selected.
  3. Only after the user checks the box and taps "Continue" do we send the one-time passcode to verify the number.

3. The opt-in screen

This is the exact consent screen shown to users, including the disclosure text that appears next to the unchecked checkbox:

Verify your number

+1 (555) 123-4567
I agree to receive one-time passcode (OTP) and account/security SMS from Flare at the number above. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help. See our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
Continue

The checkbox above is shown in its default (unchecked) state. The "Continue" action is only enabled after the user checks it.

4. Disclosures

  • Program: Flare account verification and security alerts.
  • Message frequency: varies (typically one message per sign-in).
  • Cost: Message and data rates may apply.
  • Opt out: Reply STOP to any message to stop non-essential texts.

5. Privacy of opt-in data

Mobile information, including your phone number and SMS consent or opt-in data, is never sold or shared with third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
